I Want To Be Like Jesus But I Don’t Want To Get Hurt

In some cases, this seems to be the battle cry (whimper) of too many believers today.  We want to be like Jesus as long as it doesn’t cost us too much.   That’s actually a contradiction in terms because if you’re going to be like Jesus – it’s going to cost you.

Here are a few passages that come to mind:

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters — yes, even his own life — he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.   Luke 14:26-27 NIV

For God is pleased with you when you do what you know is right and patiently endure unfair treatment. 20 Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.  21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.  1 Peter 2:19-21 NLT

Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.  Eph. 5:2 CEV

“People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do, you will be blessed.  Matthew 5:11 NCV

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,  Phil. 3:10 NIV

And being found in appearance as a man,  he humbled himself  and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!  Phil. 2:8 NIV

The Cost May Be Great But The Rewards Are Greater……

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’  Matt 25:21 NIV

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”  Matt 4:19 NIV

For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.  1 Thess 2:19-20 NIV

And now the prize awaits me — the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that great day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his glorious return.  2 Tim 4:8 NLT

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.  James 1:12 NIV

Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.  Rev 2:10 NIV
