This may sound like a silly exercise, but it might surprise you. I challenge you to do the following: 1) go through your checkbook or bank statements for the past three months and chart how/where you are spending money, and 2) chart your time useage every day for a couple of weeks in 30min-1hour time segments (just keep a simple log).
If you’re honest and willing to do this – you’ll find a better idea of what you actually worship. Worship has to do with what we ascribe worth to, and the way we spend our time & money is a pretty good indicator of what we value most.
Now ask yourself another honest question. What part does God have in my worship? Does He get any time? Does He get the left-overs? Does He have any place in my finances? Does He have priority?
On July 5, I read Matthew 4 in my time alone with God. It’s where Satan spent specific time with Jesus trying to tempt Him to abandon God’s purpose and give in to temptation. In Matthew 4:10 “Jesus answered, ‘Go away Satan! The Scriptures say: ‘ Worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.’” Dwell on that statement for a moment. Now consider this: When you are tempted to worship anything other than God – who do you think is influencing your choices?
