This the follow-up I promised to part 1 of Get God’s Word Into Your Life This Year.

Years ago right after I chose to follow Christ, Billie Hanks taught me and several other young adults how to memorize scripture at his West Texas Ranch For Christ.  Sitting at a picnic table he taught us the SHOUT method of scripture memory.  We learned 1 John 1:9 that day, and I’ve never forgotten it.

Again – you need to know the TOPIC – ADDRESS  of the verse – actual VERSE – & ADDRESS of the verse again.   See previous blog on this.

The idea of the SHOUT method of scripture memory is to SHOUT one word at a time through the entire verse as you are memorizing it; then, SHOUT every single word in the verse the last time through.

Here’s an example using 1 John 1:9   (the topic would be FORGIVENESS — the address is 1 John 1:9) so here’s how it would go:

SHOUT FORGIVENESS then say – 1 John 1:9  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

Say Forgiveness – SHOUT  1 JOHN 1:9 – then say –  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

Say Forgiveness – then say – 1 John 1:9  – then SHOUT  IF – and say –  we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

Say Forgiveness – then say – 1 John 1:9  – say If – then SHOUT WE – the say –  we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

Do this all the way through the verse – each time through SHOUTING a different word as you repeat the Topic – Address – Entire Verse – Address.

The last time through SHOUT IT ALL  – FORGIVENESS  – 1 JOHN 1:9  IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND RIGHTEOUS TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. 1 JOHN 1:9

Note:  Not a wise idea to do this in public – HA!   However – it works.  By the time you’ve gone through the whole verse like this – you will have it.   The key after memorizing it is to review it daily for at least a week – then choose to review it weekly from then on.

By The Way:  I made a change in my method after I’d done this for a while.  I no longer SHOUT every single word.   I SHOUT PHRASES that go together naturally; like – “IF WE”   “CONFESS”  “OUR SINS”  “HE”  “IS FAITHFUL” etc.

Regardless of your method – the key is GET THE WORD OF GOD INTO YOUR LIFE by memorizing scripture.
