Stumbling Block or Stepping Stone

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ you have incredible liberty & responsibility.  As I was reading in 1 cor. 8 today, Paul said we needed to be very careful how we use our freedoms.  In fact, he says we need to always keep in mind other followers of Christ who are weaker, newer or not as mature.   We need to weigh our actions and attitudes in light of how they will impact those who are not yet followers of Christ, and those who are.   In 1 Cor. 8, Paul is talking specifically about our impact on other Christians.  The bottom line is that our actions will always cause us to be a stumbling block (causing them to stumble) or a stepping stone (allowing them to move closer to Christ.)  So always be mindful of your attitudes & actions.

In light of the freedom we have in Christ – remember that Paul also wrote these words:   You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.  Gal. 5:13 NIV    If we’ll concentrate on using our freedom in Christ to serve others in love – we won’t have to worry about being a stumbling block!
